| Brief from Ayurved group (Sammy Ali, Amandev Aulakh, Thy Dinh, & Julian Owen) |
Zipped PowerPoint files |
| Our group decided to research Ayurvedic
medicine because of the emergence of alternative forms of health care in
North America and to inquire into the role of traditional medicine and
healing in the East. Being a part of the Western world, our experience
with medicine has been almost entirely based in allopathy, and we wished
to extend our knowledge of alternative forms of healing.
We would like to take the opportunity during our presentation to describe not only the role of Ayurvedic medicine in the Jaunsari region, but to also share the principles of Ayurveda that we have discovered from vaids, herbalists, and the Jaunsari people we have interacted with over the past three weeks. Our goal was to examine the role Ayurvedic medicine presently plays in Uttaranchal and to look at its evolution since the introduction of allopathy to the Indian continent. Our research questions have focused primarily on the people’s feelings toward these two health care systems and their beliefs about each. Lastly, as this experience is more about speculative inquiry, we have tried to grasp how Ayurveda is practiced - how diagnoses are made, what some of the treatments are, and how a vaid perceives disease, illness, and health – as a more qualitative understanding of this form of health care. |
